The boonie hat was introduced to the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, when U.S. Army Green Berets began wearing them in the field, along with Australian and Army of the Republic of Vietnam units. These hats were locally procured; the camo cloth was usually salvaged from other uniform items or with the former from a parachute or made up by the tailor. The name is derived from "boonie", the abbreviated form of boondocks (itself originally American military slang derived from Tagalog bundok, "mountain", during the Philippine-American War. Made to current U.S. military specs.;

The ALS (Automatic Locking System) is an intuitive thumb release lever that locks onto the ejection port. When drawing, the thumb pulls back the lever and releases the lock on the weapon.
The DFA (Drop Flex Adapter) allows the user to wear a thigh rig below the hip without shifting the weight farther down the leg and keeps the rig from sliding on the belt.
The ELS (Equipment Locking System) provides a mounting platform for tactical or competition accessories to be placed in various locations, including belt clips, tactical rigs, or directly in MOLLE loops.
FDE (Flat Dark Earth) is a medium-dark, flat, earth-toned brown color used in many Safariland products.
The GLS (Grip Locking System) is a lever that is depressed with the middle finger allowing for a smooth and easy straight-up draw out of the holster.
An IWB (Inside the Waistband) pouch or holster that is designed to fit comfortably and securely inside the waistband.
L/S - Long Sleeve
Olive Drab is a color often called just OD. It is the basic U.S. Army dark olive green that was also used by the other U.S. armed services.
MOLLE is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and backpacks used by several NATO armed forces.
OWB (Outside The Waistband) - A holster that goes on the outside of the waistband. Most commonly used by police and military, and by citizens who choose to open carry.
The MLS (MOLLE Locking System) is designed for quickly attaching and detaching a holster or firearm accessories to and from a MOLLE loop, whether it be on a vest or equipment carrier. Commonly used with the QLS (Quick Locking System) and ELS (Equipment Locking System).
The QLS (Quick Locking System) allows for quick transfer of gear between attachment points such as a belt loop, tactical leg shroud, or another stable platform.
The QUBL (QLS Universal Belt Loop) uses the QLS mounting platform to enable quick attachment and detachment of a holster. It allows the user to easily raise and lower their holster from Low-ride, Mid-ride, or High-ride holster height positions without any tools.
The RDS (Red Dot Sight) is a sight for firearms that gives the user a point of aim in the form of an illuminated red dot. Safariland offers a range of RDS compatible holsters.
S/S - Short Sleeve
SZ - Side-Zip
The SLS (Self Locking System) rotating hood device is pushed down and then rotated forward to move the SLS strap out of the way before drawing the weapon.
The TMA (Tactical MOLLE Adapter) provides a holster or accessory with a quick, easy, and secure attachment to any MOLLE loop-equipped apparel.
The UFA (Universal Flex Adapter) allows the user to wear a thigh rig below the hip without shifting the weight farther down the leg and keeps the rig from sliding on the belt. The hole pattern at the top of the UFA allows for various belt mounts to be used (belt clip, paddle, etc.)
The VUBL (Vertical Universal Belt Loop) allows a user to comfortably position their holster to sit in a low-ride, mid-ride, or hi-ride holster height position.
