Automatic knives like the Spyderco Autonomy are federally regulated, and sale is restricted to qualified personnel under federal law, including active and retired military, law enforcement, and certain other categories. State and local laws vary significantly, so you should verify your jurisdiction's rules before purchasing. WCUniforms sells this knife in compliance with applicable law.
H-1 is a nitrogen-enriched, precipitation-hardened alloy that is completely immune to rust and saltwater corrosion, unlike conventional stainless steel blades that can corrode in marine or high-humidity environments. The Spyderco Autonomy C165G uses H-1 steel because it was purpose-built for U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmers who needed a blade that would never fail due to corrosion, no matter how long it spent in salt water.
Both versions share the same blade geometry, H-1 steel, and core features. The orange variant (C165GSOR) has a satin-finished blade and high-visibility orange G-10 handles, and is the Coast Guard-approved configuration. The black variant (C165GSBBK) has a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating on the blade and all hardware for a non-reflective, tactical profile, with black G-10 handles. Both include the firing button safety and a reversible wire clip.
Yes. The Spyderco Autonomy features a patented coil spring module that is specifically designed for end-user replacement. Using Spyderco's spring replacement kit (sold separately), you can remove the module and spring without fully disassembling the knife. This was a deliberate engineering decision to make field maintenance practical for rescue professionals and military users.
An automatic knife (also called a switchblade) opens by pressing a button or switch that releases a spring-loaded blade, requiring no wrist motion from the user. An assisted-opening knife uses a spring to finish the opening stroke after the user manually begins to push or pull the blade open. Automatic knives like the Autonomy C165G are federally regulated and typically restricted to law enforcement, military, and certain other qualified buyers, while assisted-opening knives are more broadly legal for civilian purchase.
