Overview of the ASP Defender MK-3 Fog Inert Trainer | 54922
The ASP Defender LE MK-3 Fog inert trainer (54922) is a practice pepper spray canister with no OC inside. You get the same blue-top MK-3 form factor, flip-top safety, and cone-shaped fog pattern as the live Defender MK-3 Fog, so every rep feels like the real thing.
Live OC drills cost time. Trainees need decontamination, classes stall, and instructors limit how many reps each officer gets. This inert OC training spray removes that problem. ASP states that range and capacity match the active unit, so you can run drill after drill indoors or out.
Why Agencies Choose It
-
Zero exposure: 0% OC and 0 Scoville Heat Units, per ASP.
-
Duty-true handling: about 15 feet of range from a 1.5 inch MK-3 canister.
-
No mix-ups: blue actuator and INERT label separate trainers from live canisters.
Police academy instructors, agency OC instructors, and corrections trainers use it to build draw, aim, and spray habits that hold up on the street.
Key Features
-
Inert formula: ASP lists 0% oleoresin capsicum, 0% major capsaicinoids, and no marking dye.
-
Fog dispersal: a cone-shaped fog covers a wide area, so precise aim is less critical.
-
Matched performance: ASP states range and capacity equal the active MK-3 Fog, which ASP rates at about 16 half-second bursts and 5.25 seconds of continuous spray.
-
Effective range: about 15 feet (4.6 m), nominal.
-
Flip-top safety: a pushbutton actuator with a spring-loaded flip top and a large opening for gloved hands.
-
CEW safe: ASP states all Defender sprays are Conducted Energy Weapon safe, so you can train OC and CEW transitions together.
-
Inventory control: each canister carries a product number, lot number, serial number, and expiration date.
-
Durable canister: seamless aluminum, phenolic lined, DOT 2Q rated.
-
Shelf life: 5 years from manufacture, per ASP.
-
Field tested: the Defender line earned the OFFICER Labs Tested Field Rated seal.

Intended Users
Police academy and agency OC instructors use this trainer to run repeat drills without decontamination breaks. Patrol officers and deputies who carry the ASP Defender MK-4 Gel w/UV, 1.4% 55171 or another Defender canister use it for draw and deployment practice. Corrections officers rehearse OC use in tight housing units, and security guard trainers use it for use-of-force classes. Civilians who carry an MK-3 fogger for self-defense can also practice their draw and aim safely.
